Baby Registry Must-Haves for First Time Moms

Dec. 28, 2025

When I started my first baby registry, it was overwhelming to say the least. I searched the internet high and low reading reviews and searching for anything I could find in an attempt to shrink the vast selection of baby products down to the very best. For being a new to-be mom in my second trimester, it was so daunting and quickly became too much. After all of my research, plus a splash of experience in motherhood, I’ve compiled the ultimate list of baby registry must-haves, thoroughly noting it with everything you need as a first time mom!

Things to Consider

Where to Register

First, when creating a baby registry, you need to consider where you want to register!

Types of Registries

Universal Registries – These registries allow you to include items from various stores. This is a great option if you don’t want to be tied to one retailer!

I’ve used MyRegistry for my last three pregnancies. BabyList is also a popular choice.

Store-Specific – Do you have a favorite store you shop at regularly? If so, you can register there and have people gift you items specifically from their store.

Store-Specific Registries with
a Universal Option

Amazon – Amazon isn’t just good for household goods, it’s filled with all the baby products you can imagine and a multitude of baby brands.

Pros: Returns up to one year after receipt of your shipment, 15% completion discount for Prime members (10% for non-Prime members), group gifting options on certain items and an optional diaper fund, free Welcome Box ($35 value). Amazon also has the option to be a universal baby registry.

Target – Who doesn’t love Target? It’s every girls favorite go-to! It’s a great store for all of your baby essentials. At Target, you can find nursery furniture, diapers and wipes, clothing, pumping goods, feeding supplies, travel gear, and more! Target is an especially great in-store accessible option for those who aren’t so tech savvy.

Pros: Returns up to one year after due date, group-gifting option, 15% completion discount, and a registry welcome bag stuffed with samples, coupons, etc. ($150 value). Target also offers the option to be a universal registry.

Essentials VS Non-Essentials

There are some things, within reason, you just won’t use. I registered for a few items that I ended up not using because, being a first-time mom, I thought I needed them! Try to consider essentials versus nonessentials when creating your baby registry. For instance, you need baby wipes. However, you do not need a baby wipe warmer. If that’s something you truly want, then that’s okay! But, if you’re having reservations about whether to register for something or not, it’s usually best to pass.

Lifestyle & Values

If you talk to anyone about your pregnancy, they will likely provide advice that worked best for them. While this is can be helpful, you ultimately need to take your lifestyle into consideration. For instance, you may favor organic fabrics and non-toxic materials, whereas your friends might cater to convenience more. Try to take a step back and think about what works best for you and your family. If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a mother, it’s that no baby is going to be alike!

Creating Your Registry

As you decide what to register for, think of your registry as your wish list. Put everything you could need and want on your registry. People will ultimately buy you what they want, and you never know how generous they might get! I was afraid to register for bigger items, but then my husband’s family bought us a stroller and furniture set! Your friends and family want to help. Whatever they don’t buy you can buy for yourself!

Diapering

Step Diaper Pail

Munchkin

My husband and I registered for this and we really liked it! The Munchkin diaper pail is designed with a self-sealing system that keeps odors contained with a step-open pedal for hands-free operation.

The pail comes equipped with (1) Snap, Seal & Toss Bag, 2 Refill Rings, 1 Starter Refill Ring, and 1 PUCK Baking Soda Cartridge.

Nursery Diapering Essentials

Diapers

Ultimately, there are two options when it comes to diapers: cloth or disposable.

Whatever you choose is going to depend on your lifestyle. Disposable diapers offer an immediate change-and-toss convenience, while cloth diapers offer a more sustainable, yet higher-maintenance approach. If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, this article offers a range of sustainable, yet disposable options!

I personally chose to go disposable and really loved both Huggies & Pampers.

Whatever you choose, don’t be afraid to register for a lot of diapers! You will need as many as you can get over the next few years. Most registries also offer the option for a diaper fund, which people can donate towards to help cut the cost. The same goes with wipes, which are multifaceted and can go very quickly!

Wipes
Diaper Rash Cream
Disposable Diaper Rings
Changing Pad

A Few of my Favorites:

Diaper Bag

Choosing a diaper bag can be hard when you’re trying to balance both style and functionality. I personally wanted something lightweight, manageable, and easy to pair with anything. That’s where the Freshly Picked diaper bag came into play!

Mini Minimal Diaper Bag Backpack

Freshly Picked

How gorgeous is this bag? I have a variation of this one and absolutely love it! It’s made from quality vegan leather with a wipeable and stain-resistant nylon interior lining. It has 9 pockets for storage and a spacious central compartment. It’s durable, functional, and super stylish. What more can you ask for?

Diaper Bag Extras to Consider

Wet & Dry Bag

I love having one of these on hand for accidents. They have two compartments, so you have the option to store both wet and dry items separately. If your child happens to have an accident while you’re out, they are great for storing their clothes away in a pinch. The bags are also waterproof, making them additionally handy for swimwear in the summer!

Portable Changing Pad

There are a ton of really cute cloth pads on the market that are condensable for travel and offer extra storage. However, I personally like having something that’s easy to clean, if needed. Both stylish and practical, these Ava + Oliver pads are a solid choice!

Feeding & Mealtime

Everyone knows that babies need bottles, but there are so many other products that your baby will need! From highchairs to spoons, here are some items that you will need to tackle feeding as a new parent.

Breast Feeding

Whether you need a breast pump depends on whether you’re planning to breast feed or not. If you’re on the fence, I just want to say that I do recommend it. Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for most babies, and it’s also very beneficial for you! It can be a little painful starting off, but after a few weeks in, you start to toughen up and establish a special bond with your babe.

If you’re planning feed and pump, I recommend investing in a quality pump. I tried avoiding it and taking the cheaper route, buying an off-brand pump which ultimately led to it losing suction quickly. The company did replace it for free, but the second one did the same thing. That being said, invest in one from the start and you won’t need to worry going forward. Having a pump is great for a lot of things, but it can especially help when you have clogged ducts and need relief fast!

S1 Plus Electric Pump

Spectra

I just got this pump for my latest pregnancy. It’s a hospital-strength breast pump and delivers power at a fraction of the noise! Digital controls let you customize speed and suction strength. Additionally, the Spectra also comes with a rechargeable battery for wireless pumping.

Included with the pump are: Breast flange, silicone tubing, valve, membrane, bottle, lid, and adapter.

Manual Breast Pump

Haakaa

This silicone pump from Haakaa is the perfect pump for traveling! It’s what I used as my primary pump after my cheap electric ones ultimately failed. The Haakaa is fantastic for a pump and dump, or general pumping on the go. It uses the power of suction to express milk into the bulb below.

If you choose to breast feed, your breasts will leak and get sore. Below are few baby registry must haves you’ll want to help you get through the learning curve!

Mom Cozy Nipple Shields
Frida Mom Cooling Nipple Pads

Dual 4-in-1 Nursing Bra

Momcozy

Finding a comfortable nursing bra is a must. Wearing anything restricting can cause your milk ducts to clog, which can bring both pain and sickness! Finding something practical and cozy will ensure both you and your baby are relaxed! Additionally, it’s a big help having a pumping bra for hands-free expression. This is the best of both worlds!

Nursing Pillow

Boppy

I think a nursing pillow is more of a personal preference, but some women swear by them! That being said, this one is a treat, providing feeding support anywhere you need it.

Universal Feeding

Bottles

Philips Avent

I love Philips Avent bottles. They are heat and thermal shock resistant, so it can be safely stored in the fridge or warmed without worry. They are also easy to wash and sterilize.

If you’re feeling uncertain about which bottles to may be right for you, there are boxes out that offer a diverse selection where you can test and try to determine your babes favorite.

BabyList has both plastic and glass box options!

Baby Bottle Warmer

Philips Avent

I loved this bottle warmer because it was basic and multifunctional. It works with all Philips Avent bottles and is compatible with bottles from most other leading brands, as well as baby food jars; also has a defrost setting for breast milk if you’re planning to stash!

Bottle Feeding Necessities

Miscellaneous Nipples

Nipples are not one size fits all! Every child will have their own preference and given the chance that your child rejects one, it’s good to have a few others on hand to try! Once you get a feel for what they like, then you can more forward in getting specific. What bottles you choose will determine what nipple choices you have.

Sterilizer Bags

Sterilizer bags are super low-maintenance and great for popping in the microwave for easy sanitation. They were one of my favorite items to keep on hand for breastfeeding!

Drying Rack
Burp Cloths
Bibs
Bottle Brush

Silicone Baby Feeding Spoons

Netany

Soft spoons are a must-have for the first year of parenthood because they’re easier on babies sensitive gums. Although I’m a sucker for neutral aesthetics, I also really love the Munchkin® Soft Tip™ Infant Spoons. Not only are they easy on babies gums, but they’re seriously durable for when your babe hits the teething stage!

ANTILOP High Chair

Ikea

For $25.00, I was shocked at just how great this high chair ended up being! It’s budget-friendly, durable, and easy to clean. The Antilop is also great for traveling, as it breaks apart and assembles easily.

When I first bought the high chair, I found this amazing company called Yeah Baby Goods, which is marketed specifically towards the Ikea Antilop. You can buy place mats, cushion covers, legs, and foot rests. The cushion covers wash up great and the cushions are especially helpful for petite babies!

Toddler Feeding Essentials

As a general note, you don’t just need to register for infant essentials. You can register for things you will need down the line, too. Things like toddler cutlery, dishware sets, and sippy-cups are all acceptable!

Plates, Bowls, Utensils, Sippy Cups, & Mats

Toddler Spoons and Forks Set

$7.95

Mushie Round Dinnerware Bowls

$13.99

Mushie Baby Splat Mat

$24.99

Mushie Silicone Placemat

$17.99

Munchkin 360 Trainer Cups

$10.99

Mushie Silicone Suction Plate

$16.99

Mushie Square Dinnerware Plates

Newborn Bath Essentials

Infant Bathtub or Lounge

AngelCare

One of the things that you’ll worry about a lot as a new parent is positional asphyxiation. This is when a persons position prevents them from breathing properly. Newborns are unable to support their heads on their own, which puts them at a higher risk for premature death.

Pro Tip: Make sure whatever tub you get is easy to wipe clean, has a drain, or at least has mesh fabric. Your little one might be quite fond of going #2 when in the tub… Mine was!

Baby Bath Essentials Set

Skip Hop

This four-piece set includes a rinser, soft spout cover, padded elbow rest and kneeler. Once bath time starts, these can be a huge help in keeping you and baby comfortable!

2-in-1 Shampoo & Lotion Set

The Honest Company

You will want to register for a bath set for your baby. Newborns don’t require much, mostly just shampoo and lotion. I personally registered for this Honest Shampoo and Lotion set and loved it! It’s gentle on your babes skin and is mildly fragranced.

Other Bath Time Gear

Muslin Washcloths
Hooded Towels
Frida Baby Oh Cr*p! Cradle Cap Duo Set
Frida Baby The 3-Step Cradle Cap System
Bath Toy Storage
Mold-Free Bath Toys

Nursery Setup & Decor

Setting up a nursery for my daughter was one of the highlights of my pregnancy! Some key elements you will need are a crib, mattress, dresser, and glider set and/or rocking chair. I know these seem like heavier price-tag pieces, but don’t hesitate to register for them. As I said before, you have no idea how generous people will be!

Crib

Hudson 3-in-1 Convertible Crib

Babyletto

The Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 Crib is one of the safest on the market today. Being GREENGUARD GOLD certified, ASTM compliant, and equipped with a nontoxic finish its a safe, sustainable, and stylish option for the modern parent. It’s among the more affordable of cribs, too, ranging anywhere from $299.00-$1,299.00, thanks to the brands secondhand marketplace options! So, if you’re looking for a top of the line safe option without breaking the bank, Babyletto is a baby registry must haves!

Tips for Choosing a Crib

I know it can be tempting to choose that adorable vintage crib, but I highly recommend buying new in this case. Most older cribs aren’t up to the latest safety standards, which is of the utmost importance while your child is under 12 months of age. Although cribs can be on the expensive side, they are a great value because they last. That means, if you have more kids, they’re already prepared!

1. Ensure the slats are no more than 2-3/8″ apart.

2. Inspect your crib thoroughly ensuring hardware is installed properly and nothing is missing.

3. No cutouts in the headboard or the footer so your babies head won’t risk getting trapped.

4. Measure corner posts to ensure they’re no more than 1/16th inch high. Your babies clothing can get caught on these easily.

Breathable & Washable Crib Mattress

Newton Baby

100% breathable, as well as machine washable, the Newton Baby crib mattress makes an excellent and safe option for your newborn. Engineered for multi-phase use from infant to toddler transition, the mattress is designed to fit all standard frames. Additionally, the mattress is waterproof, which helps protect against diaper leaks and other damage!

Tips for Choosing a Crib Mattress

1. Make sure the mattress is a perfect, tight fit inside of the crib you choose. A general rule of thumb is you should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and crib frame.

2. Keep firmness in mind. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises putting babies asleep on a firm surface. Babies aren’t like grown adults, meaning they don’t require the same things we do for a sound nights sleep. Just think: The firmer, the safer.

3. Make sure your babies mattress is non-toxic. Some crib mattresses release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air that can harm your baby. Instead, simply look for Greenguard Gold Certified mattresses.

4. Breathability is also a crucial factor when considering a crib mattress. Once your babies learn to turn and roll over, it can put them at a higher risk for suffocation. A breathable mattress allows your child to breathe straight through, reducing the risk significantly.

Crib Bedding Staples

Fitted Sheets (2-3 Pairs)
Crib Blanket
Crib Skirt

Choosing the right baby monitor really depends on what your plans are the first year and what your lifestyle looks like. Depending on your situation, you may feel like you need a video monitor, while others may get by with the basics. Here are a few of my favorite options:

DM221-2 Audio Baby Monitor

VTech

Because my first home was around 600 sqft, my husband and I didn’t think we needed anything high-tech. We received these VTech audio monitors as a gift and they suited us perfectly! As our daughter grew, it allowed me to go downstairs to do laundry with confidence. The Tech DM221-2 comes equipped with a 1,000 foot range, a 2-way talk back intercom, 5 sound adjustments, and more. It’s truly the perfect companion for the low-maintenance parent!

Dream Duo Smart Baby Monitor

Owlet

For the parent who wants it all, the Owlet is one of the top baby monitors on the market! From heart rate tracking, oxygen monitoring, video surveillance, and sleep quality indicators… the Owlet Dream Duo accommodates it all! It even allows you to personalize a sleep program for your child. Perfect for infants 4-12 months old.

Postpartum Must-Haves

Although you have so much to think about when it comes to your baby, don’t forget to think about yourself, too! Postpartum is a recovery process and you will need to stock up on a few necessities that will make your life much easier post-birth. Ultimately, this list is going to depend on whether you delivery vaginally or have a c-section, but sometimes you never know. That being said, it’s best to be prepared for all contingencies!

Here are a few baby registry must haves for postpartum care:

Instant Ice Maxi Pads

Frida Mom

Don’t underestimate the power of ice when it comes to any form of recovery – even postpartum! Padsicles are great for bringing full-coverage, instant relief in 20 minute intervals.

Pain, Burn & Itch Relief Spray

Dermoplast

Allow me to introduce you to your new BFF! This stuff is a Godsend for perineal care and an absolutely must-have! Upon application, the spray leaves your sore areas numb, bringing you instant comfort and relief.

Other Postpartum Gear

The hospital usually provides you with what you need. However, things provided can vary from one hospital to another. Here are some things I’ve used and found helpful for postpartum care!

Peri Bottle
Postpartum Underwear
Sitz Bath & Bath Salts
MiraLAX
Extra Wide Postpartum Pads

Baby Travel Essentials

Travel as a new mom can be overwhelming whether you’re going home from the hospital, or on a short trip to the grocery store! It took me a few months to get comfortable enough to go out with my first born. Here are a few items that can help ensure you’re prepared when the time comes!

KeyFit 30 Infant Car seat & Base

Chicc0

For infants 4-30 lb and up to 30 inches, this car seat combo is a great choice. I have used it for all of my babies and it’s never let me down! The duo comes with one base with the option to buy additional bases separately. This makes it easier to invest in 1, but snap the car seat and go in any car, anywhere!

Single-to-Double Stroller 2.0

Mockingbird

I just bought this and cannot wait to bust it out! While it does run a little on the expensive side, the Mockingbird was designed with total convenience in mind.

Portable Mesh Baby Gate

Baby Delight

Being hardware-free, installation is a breeze with this gates twist-out pressure knobs. This gate can fit anywhere from 36”-60” wide, and is a perfect solution for life on-the-go or at home!

Pack ‘n Play Portable Playard

Graco

Pack ‘n’ Plays are great for an on-the-go crib, but they also serve you at home, too! For the first 6 months of my daughters life, we used her pack ‘n’ play as a bassinet in our bedroom. It’s the perfect surface for a newborn to sleep on with the mattress being thin and firm. And, as your child grows, they can evolve into a great playpen area!

Clothing & Wardrobe Accessories

Clothing

A Basic Newborn Wardrobe Breakdown

Planning your babies wardrobe in accordance with the season you expect to deliver is key, as is thinking ahead for larger sizes. For example, if you’re delivering in the winter, consider heavier layered sets. If you’re expecting a summer delivery, consider lightweight fabrics and sun hats!

Bodysuits: 10
Pants: 3-5
Mitts: 2-4 pairs
Socks: 7-10 pairs
Sleepers: 7
Hats & Beanies: 2-3
Swaddles: 3-5
Drool Bibs: 3-5

Baby Gear

Soft Foam Supportive Chair

Bumbo

Bumbo seats are great for when baby gets more curious, but can’t yet sit up unaided. It helps provide a supportive barrier for them to work on maturing their muscles, while also giving your arms a break! It’s great for things like cereal time or just hanging around the house.

DuetConnect LX Swing and Bouncer

Graco

A swing and bouncer combo can be a huge help when it comes to nap time! We actually borrowed one from a friend for our daughter and ended up loving it. I wouldn’t say this is a necessity, but it will certainly help make your life easier!

Teethers

Between 4-6 months, your baby will begin to cut teeth. This means they’ll be putting everything in their mouths! In order to give them something to chew on that’s cleanable and actually made for their gums, you will want to invest in a few teethers!

Books

When it came to registering for books, I decided to only register for my and my husbands favorite books when we were little. However, people tend to buy books because they’re easy and they make great gifts! Here are a few of my daughters current favorites (0-3 year age range), as well as a few high contrast options for infants.

Why high contrast for infants?

Because babies eyes are still developing, the high contrast images are easier for them to make out. Stimulating your baby’s eyes helps strengthen things like their attention span and improve their memory.

Note: I highly recommend board books for babies versus paperbacks. Board books are hardier and more difficult to destroy. Remember how I said your baby will put everything in their mouths during the teething stage? Books are a guarantee!

Tummy Time Mats

Activity (Tummy-Time) Mat

Mallify

Having a soft, clean surface for your baby to practice tummy-time on is essential for newborns. Whether you have a play gym or an activity mat, as long as you have somewhere soft for your baby to play, you’ll be all set.
