Autumn has always been a magical time of the year for me. The glowing lights, the crisp walks, comfort food, and the to-die-for earthy colors! I look forward to it each and every year, and as soon as the end of August arrives, the decorations start coming out. While the cold won’t arrive outside in the South until November, that doesn’t mean I can’t celebrate accordingly on the inside. One of my favorite ways to add to the autumnal charm is to bring nature-inspired elements inside. With just a few oranges and some basic supplies, I am going to show you how to create your own orange slice garland to drape over a mantel, hang from a shelf, or add to your fall table. It’s easy, inexpensive, and makes your home feel like autumn for months to come!

Benefits of making Orange Slice Garland
Cost-Effective and Memorable: In this economy, buying a ton of new decor for the season just isn’t realistic. Prices are higher than ever, so the good-old-days of making your own decor is making a comeback! Not only does it save you more money this way, but it makes more memories to share in with your family.
Note: If stored properly, orange slices can last from 2-4+ years, saving you even more money down the line!
Sustainable: By making your own garland, you’re actively reducing your carbon footprint. Orange slices are 100% natural and biodegradable as opposed to synthetic, plastic decor. When you’re done with them you can upcycle for a simmer pot, or throw them outside without concern!
Versatile & Customizable: Orange slice garland is fitting for both autumn and the holiday season. You can string them on twine, ribbon, or make fun ornaments out of them and enjoy them for several months at a time!

What you will need:
1. Mandolin slicer
2. Oranges*
3. Twine
4. Embroidery needle
5. Scissors
6. Baking sheet
7. Parchment paper
*I recommend getting (at least) one bundle of oranges versus just a few for the sake of trial and error. I have found through several seasons of making orange slice garland that, at times, the middle can be too juicy/pulpy and not slice properly.

Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 225 degrees.
2. Begin slicing your oranges on the mandolin slicer at approximately 1/8″-1/4″ in thickness. This will ensure they bake faster and give you the desired result you’re looking for.
3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the oranges on top.
4. Pat the orange slices with a dry paper towel to aid in soaking up the excess moisture prior to baking.
5. Bake for 2-3 hours. Halfway through, I recommend taking them out to flip over, then tuck them back inside the oven. Past the halfway point, you will need to check on them periodically to ensure they’re not browning.
6. Once you’re satisfied, remove from the oven and allow to cool.
7. String and decorate as you wish. I love adding cinnamon sticks to mine, as well as star anise, bay leaves, or other dried fruits! This year I added some burgundy colored velvet ribbon that absolutely brought it to life! You can truly take it and make it your own. Enjoy!
That’s it! I hope y’all enjoyed learning how to make orange slice garland. If you make it, I would love to know how it turned out!
