It’s finally starting to warm up here in North Carolina, which means I find myself consistently wandering towards my back porch. It’s safe to say that, like myself, it is also showing signs of a long endured winter and is in desperate need of some uplifting as a result! Most of the furniture we have on our porch at the moment we received either as gifts, or for free, so the porch overall doesn’t have the vibe I’m going for in the long-term. However, any little thing is bound to help improve the overall atmosphere! As a result, I thought one inexpensive way to start is by refreshing what we already have. Therefore, I’m sharing a simple DIY by upcycling plastic pots and turning them into charming clay look-a-like terracotta ones!

DIY Faux Clay Terracotta Pot: Materials & Instructions

Materials Used & What You Need
1. (2 oz.) Waverly Chalk Paint in Sandstone
2. (2 oz.) Waverly Chalk Paint in Hazelnut
3. (2 oz.) Waverly Chalk Paint in Truffle
4. Varnish/Sealer (I had this one on hand)
5. Chalk or Stencil Brush & Basic Craft Brush
6. Pot of Choice
(This is the one I used. It’s 14in x 14in x 10in & the 2 oz. paint bottles covered great!)
7. Soil/Dirt

Instructions & How-To
1. Take your craft brush and sandstone paint and begin applying the base coat. Allow to dry.
2. Begin dabbing on the hazelnut paint with your clay/stencil brush. Allow the paint go where it wants to without completely covering the pot.
3. Start adding handfuls of dirt to the paint while it is still wet & don’t be afraid to overlap with your brush! The dirt adds lots of texture for a more authentic look.
3. Once you’re satisfied, start adding in the truffle paint and dabbing “age spots” where desired. Apply dirt while drying over these as well.
4. Continue to repeat steps 2 & 3 as much as needed!
5. Once you’re satisfied, gently brush or spray a sealant over the pot and let dry.

That’s it! I was honestly surprised at how much I liked this project. As with most DIY’s, you never really know if they’re going to live up to your expectations. However, the texture turned out far better than I ever imagined it would. Do you guys have any methods you use for repurposing pots? I’d love to know your tips!
