Safe & Natural Skincare Products for Pregnancy

natural skincare products

While I’ve always tried to be mindful during pregnancy, experiencing a stillbirth last year understandably changed me. I became abruptly aware that I am no exception, and things can and do happen. Since then, I’ve become even more focused on doing things as naturally and intentionally as possible. I tend to air on the side of caution when it comes to pregnancy, meaning I cut out as much as I can. That intentional mindset has shaped every decision I’ve made this time around—from the food I eat and the products I use, and even the way I care for my body. I want to share some of the gentle, low-intervention choices I’m making in hopes they resonate with or support other moms navigating pregnancy after loss, or simply looking for a more intentional path!

Safe & Natural Skincare Products for Pregnancy

One of my absolute favorite resources to use during pregnancy is the EWG Healthy Living App. They do the research so you don’t have to in order to find the safest products available on the market. While I do recommend doing your own research as well, this can certainly help cut down on the bulk of products out there. The only downside to this app is they don’t always have the product you’re looking for information on, but it can still offer guidance on products to pursue.

Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy

• Retinoids (i.e. Retinol, Retinyl Palmitate, Tretinoin, Isotretinoin, Adapalene)

• Salicylic Acid (Acne Products)

• Hydroquinone (Dark Spots, Hyperpigmentation, and “Brightening” Products)

• Phthalates (Fragrance Related)

• Formaldehyde (Nail Polish/Hair Products)

• Chemical Sunscreens (i.e. Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Octinoxate)

• Parabens (Preservative)

All of these have been linked to developmental toxicity, birth defects, cancer, endocrine disruption, hormone disruption, and other complications. Therefore, it’s best to discuss with your doctor before adopting anything new into your routine.

My Natural Skincare Products for Pregnancy

Castille Soap

When I lived on the West Coast many years ago, I was a loyal fan of natural, homemade bar soaps. They were easy to find at local markets, and before long, they were all I used. It wasn’t even about the ingredients at the time, but the way they made me feel. Over the years, I started accumulating body washes that I’d been gifted and, trying to be practical, I decided to use them up before continuing to buy more bar soap.

However, it wasn’t long before I noticed a pattern returning: those heavily fragranced, commercial washes always left a film on my skin. I’d step out of the shower still feeling unclean! Now, with this newest pregnancy, I’ve made the switch back to bar soap, and it’s been a total game changer. Castile soap in particular has won me over this time around—it’s completely natural, gentle, and leaves me feeling both clean and confident about what I’m putting on my body.

Farmacy Beauty Green Clean

Farmacy Beauty is a brand I’ve been devoted to for years. I’m planning to do a post in the future reviewing their products because I’ve truly used SO many of them! The Green Clean is one of the first makeup removing balms that made me feel like the dirt and residue was all gone.

Farmacy Beauty Daily Greens

Daily Greens by Farmacy Beauty is a great, lightweight moisturizer. I realized years ago that the older I got, the oiler my skin got. Therefore, finding a moisturizer that didn’t clog my pores or ignite any blemishes was a struggle for a while. This moisturizer is a gel and is more lightweight than a cream. It’s oil-free, absorbs nicely, and can be used both AM & PM.

Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner

I used to think almost all toners were made alike, but apparently they’re not! Dickinson’s is an excellent, 100% natural and fragrance-free option for those with sensitive skin—like me!

Burts Bees Lip Balm

Sometimes I think our lips get overlooked as part of our skin care routine, but they’re still an important part of it nonetheless. Keeping them moisturized helps them stay plumped, healthy, and comfortable. You’re already uncomfortable enough during pregnancy, so doing even the smallest things that help ease any other discomfort helps!
